It may not have been a Super Bowl parade – but on Tuesday, June 26th, Payton and Eli were honored at the Hermosa Beach City Council for their accomplishments in the classroom.

Payton Lee Buckley and Eli Rivas were this year’s recipients of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Scholarship and the John Workman Memorial Scholarship.

Payton Lee Buckley is a graduating senior from Mira Costa Costa High School where she maintains a 4.0 Grade Point Average and is a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll. Payton enjoys writing and documentary filmmaking and aspires to help others in the community. She also volunteers locally for Habitat for Humanity and plays guitar in her church youth group band. She has plans to attend Azusa Pacific University and major in Global studies with a minor in Theater Production.

Elias is a graduating senior from Mira Costa High School where he was a four year member of the Mustang football team as well as a member of the National Honor Society. Elias earned a 3.97 Grade Point Average and was also very active with the school’s drama club and Model United Nations team. This fall he plans to attend Harvard while looking to major in government.

The John Workman Memorial Scholarship was established by the Chamber in January 2012 to honor the memory of John Workman. Workman served as Treasurer for the City of Hermosa Beach for 18 years and was an active member of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Rotary Club before his passing in November of 2011.

John’s wife Mary Ellen serves on the committee which, along with members of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, selects the recipient of the John Workman Scholarship Award, which will be awarded annually to a student from a local high school to assist with their college funding.

Congrats to both of our 2012 scholarship award winners!
